This design is No. 2 in a series of 10 and comes from a batch of Christmas cookies I made in December 2020, during the first long year of the COVID pandemic. A friend and colleague—who also happens to be one of the first people to really train me in 3D scanning—had moved to another state for work long before the lockdown began. During that isolating time, she began organizing virtual crafting gatherings, teaching us a craft or guiding us through an activity while we worked together from our separate homes. These gatherings became some of the few and precious moments when I felt genuinely connected to other people. I do not think she realizes just how much they meant to me.
These cookies were part of one of those virtual gatherings. There are ten designs in this collection, inspired by the cookies I decorated that day. The cookies themselves did not last, of course, but turning the cookies into cross-stitch ornaments feels like a way of preserving the special memory of the afternoon spent making them and the feeling of being brought together during a time when so many of us were painfully apart.
We also made Christmas decorations during one of those gatherings, and every year when I hang them on the tree, I think of my friend and what she created for us during that difficult season. What stays with me is not only the crafts themselves, but the care behind them. She found a way to offer companionship, creativity, and a small sense of occasion when ordinary forms of gathering were simply unavailable. This cookie ornament is a record of that kindness and of the ways handmade things can carry memories of the people who helped us feel a little less alone.
This piece also reflects something that matters to me about the work I share here. The original cookies were made and decorated by me, the source photographs are my own, and when I adapt my images into graphic designs or patterns, I do that work myself. I care deeply that these pieces come out of my own life, my own experience, my own hands, and my own way of seeing.
